FAQs

A class I want to take a UVA course that is not currently listed in the system?

While the elective exception approval system is tied to SIS, occasionally, not all classes will show up in the pre-populated options for UVA courses. Students are encouraged to manually input course information for classes that are not listed in the system as necessary.

What if I don't enroll in a class I submitted for approval?

A student that gets approval for a course but does not have to take that course will be expected to complete the minor’s requirements through another avenue. More specifically, students will still be expected to complete the requirements for the minor by taking one of the other pre-approved elective courses or by getting approval through this site and completing another elective course.

Can I take courses abroad?

The site does allow students to submit for courses abroad to be considered for elective exception approval. That said, it is highly recommended that students first discuss any abroad courses with their advisor in their UVA school of enrollment to make sure that: 1) the course will be accepted by the school of enrollment (e.g., College of Arts & Sciences, Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy, etc.) and 2) that the advisor confirms with the student how the number of credits for the course will convert from the aboard institution to UVA’s course credit system.

If a student does study abroad through a UVA-approved program, the following is possible: 1) up to 1.5 credit hours of core courses for the GBM may be satisfied with study abroad courses, and 2) up to 3.0 credit hours of electives for the minor may be satisfied with study abroad courses.

I got approval for a course. Does that guarantee I can take the class?

Approval given through this site only confirms that the course will count towards the minor’s requirements if the student completes the course. For exception electives, students must work with the instructor of record for any course to make sure that they meet the prerequisites for the course and that there is room available in the course for the student to enroll.
